Skill Builder climbs are intended to help develop the climber's technique, ability to read beta, to sequence individual movements correctly, and to refine their movement patterns. These climbs are intended to be lower in intensity in order to offer a more accessible entry point to specific skillsets in climbing. Check the climb's comments to read about the setter's intention!

Skill Builder

Fitness Builder climbs are intended for the climber to be able to train their strength, endurance, and general fitness through fundamental climbing movements. In this category, climbs will generally be lower in complexity but offer a more challenging intensity for the climber to develop strength in their fingers, core, back, arms, etc. In this category, the "grips make the grade" and you can expect relatively straight-forward climbing movement.

Fitness Builder

The Benchmark category of climbs is intended to test both the climber's strength as well as their skillset. Athletes can expect these climbs to be stimulating both in intensity as well as their complexity, required skillset, or specific movement sequencing. Similar to the "benchmarks" you might find on training boards or elsewhere in the world, these climbs might feel particularly challenging at the proposed grade.

Benchmark

The Height Friendly characteristic is intended to identify climbs that are specifically catered towards shorter athletes. 

Height Friendly

These climb characteristics are intended to help climbers identify the intent behind a climb that satisfies one of the following three general purposes: to improve their physical fitness and strength (Fitness Builder), to improve their climbing skillset and problem solving (Skill Builder), or to test their fitness and skills simultaneously (Benchmark). The fourth characteristic is meant to identify climbs specifically intended to be accessible for shorter athletes (Height Friendly).

Boulder Characteristics

Beta Intensive climbs are intended to challenge the climber's ability to read their route from the ground and to predict specific sequences of movements while climbing on a rope. This is meant to help climbers become smarter and more skilled in their climbing accumen while keeping the physical intensity at an accessible level. 

Beta Intensive

Resistance style routes are intended to be the equivalent of the "Fitness" characteristic in bouldering. These climbs are primarily lower in complexity, yet still present a challenge in the physical demand of the grips that are involved in the climbing. Climbers can expect a relatively consistent intensity from start to finish of the route, with minimal spikes or dips in difficulty. These routes are great for gaining general fitness and endurance and are recommended to be used for those who train "repeaters" to gain fitness.

Resistance

The Adventure characteristic is intended to capture the essence of onsight climbing on "feature" style climbs. These routes are intended to feel exploratory with ample rest points where the climber can consider the terrain above and how to navigate in more finessed ways. You can expect skills such as stemming, mantles, and other such techniques to be explored on routes of this type.

Adventure

Progressive routes are characterized by increasing difficulty and/or complexity as the climber ascends to the top of the wall. Minimal rests keep the pump building while moves become more difficult towards the top sections of the route, culminating in a final redpoint crux near the top of the wall. These routes are most akin to the style you would expect to see in competitions where separating athletes evenly along the route is the primary objective. This characteristic is most similar to the "Benchmark" boulder characteristic. Ticking a route of this style is a great way to measure growth into new grades or to challenge both your physical fitness, mental game, and technical skillset.

Progressive

These climb characteristics are intended to help climbers identify the intent behind a climb that satisfies one of the following four general purposes: to improve their physical fitness (Resistance), to improve their climbing skillset and route reading (Beta Intensive), to explore terrain in novel ways (Adventure), and to test their physical and mental preparedness (Progressive). There is also a fifth characteristic meant to specifically identify climbs that are intended for shorter athletes (Height Friendly).
